On Tuesday 15th September, in recognition that the UK is home to 85% of the world’s chalk streams, twenty-five Members of Parliament and Peers attended the inaugural meeting of an APPG with the mission to promote the interests of this precious natural resource.
This grouping brings together parliamentary supporters of chalk streams to champion their biodiversity through promoting environmental good practice, centred on sustainable flows and sensitive land management.
The APPG will be looking to work with Ministers, and other interested parties, to promote chalk stream conservation. It will seek to ensure that in chairing COP26, the UK places chalk streams on the international environmental agenda.
The UK cannot take a lead in the protection of global ecosystems without first looking after its own.
The meeting was held virtually in accordance with Parliament’s guidelines for APPGs.
The following have agreed to serve as Officers of the APPG: Chair Sir Charles Walker MP, Officers Flick Drummond MP, Lord Chidgey, Rachel Hopkins MP, Daniel Zeichner MP, Lord Ribeiro, Maria Miller MP, Matt Western MP, Daisy Cooper MP, Dame Cheryl Gillan MP, Sir Oliver Heald MP, Gagan Mohindra MP, Laura Farris MP, James Wild MP.
