We have started to rollout the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine today.
Over 1 million Pfizer vaccines have been administered across the UK so far. We have 530,000 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine ready to join that growing number in the coming days.
These numbers mean that we have vaccinated more people than the rest of Europe put together. That is a fantastic achievement by Matt Hancock and his team at the Department for Health and Social Care.
By the end of this week, over 1000 vaccine centres will have been set up across the UK. Our vulnerable residents will have access to vaccines regardless of where they live.
The four UK Chief Medical Officers have agreed that we must prioritise the first dose of vaccines for as many at risk people as possible. This will double the number of people who are protected over the coming months whilst our healthcare system is under strain. Everyone will receive a second dose within 12 weeks.
There will be no ‘mix and matching’ of the vaccines.
