Gagan recently visited the Mission EmployAble Cafe in Chorleywood. The Cafe provides work opportunities and training for young people with learning difficulties.
During his visit Gagan met Gregory, a previous intern in the cafe, who is now working part time for a national delivery company and a large retail company. He also had the opportunity to talk to Katharine Weston, Mission EmployAble’s Chair, with whom he discussed Gregory’s success. Gagan noted that Gregory’s new found employment seemed to come as a direct result of the skills and training he had received from the charity.
Mission EmployAble’s website says:
“Mission EmployAble is unique in offering Functional Maths, Functional English and job experience in one place, with all interns together and with a dedicated training team.
Our vision matters because there are currently 1.5 million people with learning disabilities in the UK, almost 94% of whom are unemployed or doing voluntary work. Consequently, far too many of them are denied the independence, personal satisfaction and social connections that a job brings and sadly, many find their emotional and physical health suffer as a result.”
Reflecting on his visit Gagan said:
“[Mission EmployAble’s] Cafe is a community asset for its social mission as well as its excellent food and drink (I recommend the Winter Salad!)”
