Gagan Mohindra asked the Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, about rail strikes and their economic impact on everyone across the country
Having spoken to constituents outside the Tring Railway Station recently, Gagan was aware of the disruption that these strikes have caused to so many. As reliable and healthy transport is one of Gagan’s top priorities, he raised the issue of the strikes in a debate in the House of Commons on industrial actions on the railways on Thursday 30th June, asking the Secretary of State for Transport:
“What assessment he has made of the economic impact of the rail industrial action between 21 and 25 June 2022?’
Gagan then said: “It is unfortunate to see railway workers choose to strike rather than accept a pay rise, considering the economic implications of rail strikes. It was estimated by the Centre for Economics and Business Research the cost of the RMT rail strike action would be at least £91 million due to work absences. The Network Rail estimated the direct costs of last week’s strike to the ail industry to be between £100-150 million. This is clearly unacceptable."
Gagan continues to make reliable and healthy transport across his constituency one of his top priorities and will keep working tirelessly with local authorities and providers to ensure that this remains the case.
