On Monday morning, Gagan Mohindra MP met with members of the Wendover Canal Trust and the Chiltern Society. They walked along the canal and discussed the progress of the development project which aims to restore the canal to its former glory.
The 11km Wendover Canal is a rare chalk stream originating in the Chiltern Hills near Wendover, feeding water to the summit of the Grand Union Canal (GUC) at Bulbourne near Tring. Construction of the canal began in 1793 but was unexpectedly paused in 1904. The original purpose of the canal was to supply the GUC with top-up water which in turn feeds and sustains the GUC from London to Milton Keynes, providing benefits throughout.
Gagan thanked the Wendover Canal Trust volunteers and Chiltern Society who have worked incredibly hard over the past few years. So far, they have renovated 2km between the GUC and Little Tring. The volunteers are now working on a 2.5km stretch from Little Tring to Buckland Wharf, hoping to move onto Buckland to Wendover in the future.
Following the visit, Gagan said: “It was lovely to take a walk along the Wendover canal this crisp morning and see first-hand the excellent work by over 100 volunteers to bring this section back to life.”
